He was born in Chanteloup-en-Brie, France on 9/22/1908. He did a lot of outside candid photos. His photos were described mysterious. He was described as the "Master of Candid Photography". In the 70's he took up drawing and studied painting in the 1920.
In 1928-29 he studied art, literature, and English at the University of Cambridge. His 1st photojournalist photos were published in 1937 when he covered King George IV and Queen Elizabeth for the French Regards. In the 1920s schools that taught photography were popping up everywhere throughout Europe but each of them had a different view the direction photography. In his early life he took pictures of holidays with a Box Brownie. He was inspired by a picture that showed 3 naked African American boys in 1930.
